Raina retires: Is this the real reason behind his announcement on August 15?
Cricket fans across the world were left stunned after MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina announced their respective retirements from international cricket on late Saturday evening. It wasn’t just any other day in the calendar but India’s 73rd Independence Day on August 15.
While the news did seem sudden and painful, fans on social media wondered why both cricketers chose this historical day to announce their exit. Could it be because of Dhoni’s love for the country on and off the field? Did Raina persuade Mahi to do it together? Or was there another reason why these back-to-back announcements were made?
Well, here’s a unique theory put forward by a Twitter user. Upon looking closely, one can observe that Dhoni’s jersey number was 7 and Raina’s was 3. If both numbers are put together, the resulting number is ’73’. Since August 15 marked the completion of India’s 73rd Independence Day, it is possible that both players considered this as the right time.

What added further fuel to this interesting observation is Raina’s reply to the user. The CSK batsman replied only in emoticons, which indicated that this could well be the real reason. Whether there was any truth to this theory making the rounds, only time will tell!

Nonetheless, both Dhoni and Raina will be present at the CSK training camp that begins on August 16 in Chennai. The six-day conditioning camp will end on August 21, after which the entire squad will leave for the UAE for IPL 2020 starting September 19.
