Punjab Kings in search of new head coach
Anil Kumble’s tenure as the head coach of IPL franchise Punjab Kings is now over as the franchise chose not to renew his contract. A board consisting of several owners, including Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, industrialists Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, and Karan Paul, as well as the Punjab Kings’ CEO Satish Menon, decided to relieve Kumble of the duties.
There has not been any update on who has succeeded the former India cricketer in the role, but the franchise is reportedly looking out for potential candidates and an announcement is expected to be made soon. Punjab Kings finished in the bottom half of the IPL points table in each of the three seasons that Kumble oversaw since 2020.
Before the addition of the two new teams in 2022, Punjab Kings finished fifth in the 2020 and 2021 editions when eight teams competed for the prized trophy. In the revamped 10-team tournament that was played in the current year, which was also the 15th edition of the cash-rich event, the Kings finished sixth.
With a new head coach, PBKS will look for their first IPL title
Punjab Kings’ tryst with the head coach has been going on for a very long time, but the team has not managed to win a single title over the past 15 years of the tournament. At the time of Kumble’s appointment in 2020, he became the fifth coach for the Kings in the past five years. Before him, Sanjay Bangar (2014–16), Virender Sehwag (2017), Brad Hodge (2018), and Mike Hesson (2019) had been in the role of the head coach.
