Prithvi Shaw to lead Mumbai in Ranji Trophy knockouts
As per the latest developments, Prithvi Shaw has been named Mumbai’s captain for knock-out rounds of the Ranji Trophy, which will get underway on June 6 in Bengaluru. Mumbai are slated to play Uttarakhand in the quarterfinals and the Salil Ankola-led senior selection committee named a 21-member squad, which was announced late on Monday (May 23).
Notably, Shreyas Iyer won’t be available for these fixtures amid national duties. At the same time, Shivam Dube and Suryakumar Yadav have not been picked due to injury issues. Meanwhile, the selectors have kept their faith in Sarfaraz Khan, who had a decent IPL 2022 with Delhi Capitals. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who’ll open alongside Shaw, has also played some fine knocks for Rajasthan Royals this season.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw to fire at the top for Mumbai
Hence, the southpaw would be determined to make a mark for his state team as well. As far as the bowling unit is concerned, veteran pacer Dhawal Kulkarni will lead the attack with the likes of Tushar Deshpande and Shams Mulani assisting him. Overall, the side looks pretty balanced despite the absence of some key names and would like to put up an emphatic show in the knock-out rounds.
Meanwhile, these matches will be important for Shaw as he has been on the sidelines of the Test team since a while. He last played a Test match back in December 2020 against Australia, where he had a hard time. With the likes of Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill already fighting for the two opening slots, Shaw needs to put up a stellar show to make the selectors notice him.
Speaking of Mumbai’s performance, they won two of their three games in the group stage while an encounter resulted in a draw. While they’ll take the field as favourites against Uttarakhand, they shouldn’t be complacent.
