Prithvi Shaw smashes a record one-day double ton
Star Indian cricketer, Prithvi Shaw marked his way into the annals of English cricket history by notching an unbeaten double century in the Royal London One-Day Cup 2023 against Somerset on August 9. The 23-year-old joined an exclusive club of cricketers worldwide who have achieved this milestone in the tournament. His outstanding performance broke last year’s record set by Ollie Robinson, who had scored a brilliant 206.
Having faced criticism for his recent form, the youngster silenced everyone with an astonishing innings against in Northamptonshire’s third group-stage match of the season. After scoring 60 runs in the previous two matches combined, Shaw displayed his real batting prowess, smashing an extraordinary 244 off a mere 153 balls with 28 fours and 11 huge sixes.
Shaw scripted his name into the record books by becoming the first Indian cricketer to score a double century in the tournament. Moreover, his remarkable feat overtook the previous record held by Ollie Robinson and Ali Orr. In the 2022 edition, Robinson and Orr had set the bar by scoring 206 runs each, securing the first-ever double centuries in the competition.
Shaw has had its ups and downs in the tournament. The cricketer had faced an unusual dismissal as he was dismissed hit wicket for 34 in the first game against Gloucestershire. Subsequently, he could score just 26 runs against Sussex. However, Shaw reached the double-century milestone in just 129 balls, setting a new record for the fastest double-hundred in England’s List A cricket.
Shaw’s cricket journey has been remarkable so far, marked by participation in 56 List A games. He has amassed over 2700 runs at an impressive average of 51, including eight hundreds and 11 fifties. Shaw will look to maintain his brilliant form in the upcoming matches which might eventually give him a chance to make a comeback to the Indian team.
