Pat Cummins rules out three-match WTC final proposal
After the completion of the World Test Championship final at The Oval, India skipper Rohit Sharma proposed a three-match Test series to decide the winner of the competition. However, his Australian counterpart, Pat Cummins, ruled out the idea as the ace pacer believes that a one-off match is just fine. He cited the example of the Olympics, where the racers get only one chance to win the gold medal.
Notably, India were handed an embarrassing defeat as Australia went on to win the match by 209 runs. There were glimpses of hope that the Indian team could pull off something special on Day 5, but Australian pacers absolutely derailed India’s batting unit as the Rohit Sharma-led side eventually collapsed in the morning session. Post that, Rohit proposed a three-match series as he believed that the team had worked really hard for two years, and thus, a one-off match is unfair to judge.
“I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard, and we fought, but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle,” Rohit said in the press conference.
“I think it’s fine. No qualms. I think ideally you’d have 50-match series, but the Olympics have come down to one race to win a gold medal. AFL, NRL seasons have finals. That’s sport,” Cummins stated when asked about Rohit’s proposal.
We adapted well and that’s what makes it so satisfying: Cummins
Cummins was thrilled after Australia’s massive win in the final as Australia became the first country to win all three ODI, T20 and Test World Championships. After the match, the 30-year-old mentioned that the win is very special to him as they have adapted well to English conditions.
“The win here but to make it to the final you’ve got to win everywhere in the world. I think this cycle was 20 Test matches. I think we might have only lost three or four and out of the 20 the boys were fantastic the whole way through. We adapted well and that’s what makes it so satisfying,” Cummins said.
