Pat Cummins appointed as Australia’s new ODI captain
Following Aaron Finch’s retirement from the ODI format, Pat Cummins has been named as Australia’s new ODI skipper. Notably, Cummins will become the first-ever fast bowler to lead the Australian side in white-ball format. Finch, who had announced his retirement from ODIs last month, will continue to lead the T20I side, whereas Cummins will now oversee the Test team and the ODI team.
Cummins will undertake the captaincy responsibilities for the England series beginning on November 17 at the Adelaide Oval and is likely to lead Australia in the ODI World Cup in India the following year. With one year until the next ODI World Cup, Cricket Australia’s decision, which was made public on Tuesday, October 18, is quite essential.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership. They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience,” Cummins was quoted as saying in a Cricket Australia media release.
“Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India,” said George Bailey, Chair of Selectors.
Cummins’ successful Test captaincy helps him get the ODI role
Because of how successfully Cummins has led the Test team thus far, he is thought to have edged over competitors David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Alex Carey, and Mitchell Marsh. After the T20 World Cup, Australia is slated to play England in three one-day international matches beginning on November 17.
“We are very fortunate to have a number of high-quality leaders and senior players across all formats. The Board and selectors agree Pat is the ideal choice to lead the ODI team through the next period including the 2023 World Cup,” said Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia’s EGM of High Performance and National Teams.
