All-rounders are a luxury to have for any team in any particular format. They provide a perfect balance in the line-up with their dual skills of scoring runs and picking up wickets. These players still have their dominant role by which one categorizes them as batting or bowling all-rounders. In the longest format of the game, the Test format, there have been a few top-notch players who have achieved the treble of scoring 6000-plus runs, taking 100-plus wickets, and grabbing over 100 catches and they appear in this article.
Let’s take a look at these three players who have managed to achieve the above-mentioned treble in Test cricket:
Garry Sobers
Former legendary West Indies all-rounder Garry Sobers played 93 Tests and scored 8032 runs at an average of 57.78. In 160 innings, Sobers smashed 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries with the highest score of 365*. In 159 innings, the spinner snared 235 scalps at an average of 34.03 with the best bowling figures of 6/73. Sobers picked up five-wicket hauls six times in Test cricket. He also had a safe pair of hands as he grabbed 109 catches in his 20-year-long career.
Jacques Kallis
Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis appeared in a staggering 166 Test matches and scored 13289 runs at an average of 55.37. In 280 innings, Kallis slammed 45 hundred and 58 fifties with the best score of 224and also picked up 292 wickets at an average of 32.65, with the best figures of 6/54. Kallis managed to pick up five wicket-haul five times in Tests. The Proteas legenda grabbed 200 catches in the longest format of the game of which 196 came for South Africa, the highest by any fielder for them. Notably, he is also the leading run-getter for the team in the format with 13206 runs.
Ben Stokes
After completing 100 catches in the recently-concluded Ashes series, Ben Stokes became the latest entrant in this chart. The England all-rounder has played 97 Test games in which he has managed to rack up 6117 runs at an average of 36.41. In 175 innings, Stokes has smashed 13 centuries and 30 half-centuries with the highest score of 258. The right-arm fast-medium seamer has snared 197 scalps in 146 innings at an average of 32.07 with the best figures of 6/22. Stokes has picked up five-wicket hauls four times in his successful career so far. He has 102 catches to his name in the format as he joined some legendary names in this list.
