On this day: Sachin Tendulkar’s glorious knock of 175 against Australia

Sachin Tendulkar is regarded as one of the best batsmen the world of cricket has witnessed so far. The highest run-getter in both ODI and Test formats, he is the only player to score more than 30,000 international runs in his absolutely glorious career. While the batting maestro used to be on the crease, bowlers had tough times bowling at him. Largely known as the God of cricket, he is the only one to have 100 international centuries under his belt.

Sachin Tendulkar is the first player to smash the first double ton in ODI cricket. He has been honoured with various sporting, and civilian honours and the most prestigious one stands to be Bharat Ratna. He was honoured with Bharat Ratna in 2013 and became its youngest recipient and the only sportsperson to receive it to date. Talking of his various achievements and glories, one of them came in 2009, where he stunned the Australian team.

Though India lost the game by three runs, his innings became the highlight of the day. During the Australia tour of India in 2009, the 5th ODI was played between the two teams in Hyderabad. The guest batted first and scored huge 350 runs where Shaun Marsh’s century and Cameron white’s half-century became the bright spot of their batting show. While chasing the target, Tendulkar smashed a magnificent 175 of 141 to push the men in blue forward.

Sachin crossed 17,000 runs in ODI cricket after 175 against Aussies

However, Tendulkar didn’t get much support from any of the batsmen in front, and India ended up losing the match by just three runs. Suresh Raina added 59 runs from his end, but somehow things fell a bit short ahead of the massive target. Clint McKay and Shane Watson were brilliant in their spell as they took three wickets each to stop the run flow of Indian batsmen. Tendulkar was named as the player of the match for his stunning performance. He single-handedly almost won India the game and went on to hit 19 fours and 4 sixes during his stay in the middle. Unfortunately, he got out with the team needing only 19 runs and the stupendous knock went in vain.

Nevertheless, his 175 against Australia is Sachin’s second personal best in the same format. With this century, the batting legend breached the 17,000-run mark in ODI cricket and became the first player in the world to achieve this milestone.
