On this day in 2019: West Indies win a Test series against England after 10 years

2nd February 2019. Remember the date. It was on this date, two years ago, that West Indies won a Test series against England for the first time in a decade. Before 2019, the last time the West Indies had won a Test series against the England side was way back in the year 2009.

The West Indies had thrashed England in the first Test that took place at Barbados in January 2019 by 381 runs, and England entered the second Test against the hosts with their backs against the wall. The visitors needed a win to stay alive in the series.

Hosts take a substantial lead

The West Indies won the toss and opted to field first. England put up a very disappointing performance with the willow. The visitors were bowled out for a below-par score of 187 in the first innings, with as many as 7 of their batsmen not even crossing double figures. Kemar Roach was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies and scalped 4 wickets giving away just 30 runs.

The West Indies started their first innings in a positive fashion, with their openers putting on a partnership of 70 runs. Shai Hope and Darren Bravo continued the good work. While Hope scored a 66 ball 44, Bravo frustrated the England bowlers, consuming 216 balls for his 50 runs. Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich contributed a handy 31 lower down the order, and West Indies finished with a score of 306 runs in their first essay.

WI bowlers rout England once again

In the second innings, England’s performance with the bat was again miserable. In fact, the highest run-scorer for England in the second innings was Jos Buttler, who scored 24. And, in the second innings, England were bowled out for a paltry score of 132. Kemar Roach and Jason Holder destroyed the England batting line up, picking up 8 wickets between them.

In the second innings, the West Indies were set a target of just 14 runs to win, and they romped home with 10 wickets to spare. It was a crushing victory for the West Indies in the second Test. And with that, they had also won the Test series, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match rubber. And surely, it was a series win that they can look back on with a lot of pride. Kemar Roach won the Man of the Match award in the second Test, for picking up 8 wickets in the match.
