On this day in 2019: India win their first-ever day-night Test

Ishant

Virat Kohli and company played its first-ever day-night match in 2019 against Bangladesh in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The first Day-Night Test was played in such a dominating form by Indians that the team bagged the match in a little over two days. Coming to the field with willows first, the guests struggled to play against the pace and failed to put anything significant on the board.

The top and the middle order were brutally devastated by the dangerous pace attack of Ishant Sharma, who bagged an impressive five-wicket haul in the game. Shadman Islam’s 29 runs were the highest individual score from the visitors’ batting line up. The rest of them also failed to make a mark, and Bangladesh were bundled up for mere 106 runs.

India were not in the mood to carry it forward for a long time as they started wreaking havoc with the bat in the first innings only. Virat Kohli’s century (136 runs) combined with Cheteshwar Pujara’s half-century (55 runs) led India to post 347 runs on the table. Rahane also added significant 51 runs from his end. The hosts decided to declare their innings and invited the guests to bat again.

Ishant Sharma stole the show outright

Al-Amin-Hossain and Ibadat Hossain gathered three wickets each under their belt. In the next innings as well, Bangladesh were weak in their batting display as they struggled to breach even the 200-run mark. This time, they saw their end on 195 runs, and Mushfiqur Rahim’s knock of 74 runs became the backbone of their batting show.  Another five-wicket haul came in India’s account, courtesy Umesh Yadav.

Ishant Sharma was impressive yet again and bagged four wickets under his belt. With 9 wickets in total during the match, he was named the man of the match for his pure dominance with the ball. India won the match by an innings and 46 runs and the series by 2-0. It took India only 47 minutes on the third day of the Test to become the first team to win four matches in a row by an innings.
