On this day in 2016: Bangladesh register Test victory England

Bangladesh’s only win in Test Cricket against England came on this historic day 4 years ago (30th October), in the second Test of England’s tour of Bangladesh. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first on a spinning track in Mirpur. Tamim Iqbal reached a stroke-filled half-century off just 60 deliveries and reached 68 at the end of lunch on Day 1. He went on to score 104 runs. However, Bangladesh ended up collapsing from 171/1 to 220 all-out. Moeen Ali took a five-wicket haul, while Woakes and Stokes took 3 and 2 wickets each.

England scored 114/6 at the end of lunch on Day 2. Mehedi Hasan, the 19-year-old off-spinner spun a web, taking the wickets of Cook, Ballance, Moeen, and Bairstow in the first session of the day. England collapsed to 144/8, as Joe Root departed for a well-made 54. Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes added 99 runs for the 9th wicket. England ended up scoring 244 runs and taking a crucial 24-run lead. Bangladesh responded with intent, scoring 152/3 in 31 overs.

They batted for another session on the third day and ended up with 296 runs on the board. England had to chase down 273 to clinch the series 2-0. They started extremely well, with openers Cook and Duckett scoring 100 runs in the first 23 overs of the 4th innings. England looked on track to comfortably chase down the target. However, the damage was done in the final session of the third day’s play.

Mehidy Hasan took the wicket of Ben Duckett to break the opening stand. This triggered a major collapse. Shakib and Mehedy then rolled over the England team with an exceptional display of spin bowling. From 100/0, they collapsed to 164 all-out in the span of the next 20 odd overs. Shakib took 4 wickets while Mehedy picked six wickets.

Mehidy was also named the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series for his 12-wicket haul in this all-important match against England. Bangladesh had defeated England earlier in the 2015 WC as well. However, this was the first time a major victory came for them against inventors of the sport in the longest format of the game.
