On this day in 2014 – Stuart Binny’s exceptional spell helps India take Bangladesh down
One of the most unbelievable bowling performances in ODI cricket took place in 2014 on this day (June 17) in a fixture between India and Bangladesh in Mirpur. All-rounder Stuart Binny. primarily known for his batting skills, turned up with a match-winning spell to record an incredible victory for India.
Bangladesh elected to bowl first after winning the toss and the move worked out perfectly as Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for a golden duck. The runs did not come fluently and the Bangladesh bowlers kept picking up wickets at right intervals to leave India stuttering at 6 for 66 with the skipper Suresh Raina gone.
The lower order did not contribute much and a 13-ball 17 from Umesh Yadav ensured that India crossed the 100-run mark. In the end, the Men in Blue were bowled out for just 105 and it looked like Bangladesh would run away with an easy win. Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers as managed a fifer on his debut and was quite impressive.
In reply, the Bangladesh openers were removed quickly by Mohit Sharma in the powerplay. Mohammad Mithun and Mushfiqur Rahim did get a partnership going for the third wicket, however, it did not last long once Binny came into the attack. The right-arm seamer bowled exceedingly well with beautiful outswingers that took the edges and went into the gloves of the wicketkeeper.
In fact, Binny ran through the middle order of Bangladesh and left them in complete disarray. He completed a five-wicket haul in the process and produced one of the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in the 50-over format. Binny finished with figures of 6 for 4 in 4.4 overs with two maidens as Bangladesh were bundled up for just 58. India ended up winning the rain-affected game by 47 runs by DL method.
