On this day in 2013: Virat Kohli’s ton headlines India’s sensational win over WI
Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli might be struggling for runs currently, but he has ruled the international arena for the past many years and scored hundreds for fun. One of Kohli’s centuries came against West Indies during an ODI match played at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in 2013.
Batting first, the Men in Blue got the perfect start as openers Rohit Sharma (46 runs) and Shikhar Dhawan (69 runs) thrashed the Men in Maroon. However, the home team bounced back excellently and took Indian wickets at regular intervals.
Captain Kohli (102 runs) scored an excellent century as India overcame the odds and scored a fighting total of 311 runs. The right-handed batter with the tailenders and paced his innings to perfection. The 33-year-old smoked his century in just 83 balls and smashed West Indies bowler for 13 fours and two maximums. To note, it was his 14th ODI century.
Kohli went into the beast mode in the last 10 overs of the innings as he smashed 67 runs of the 101 that India scored in the final phase of the Indian innings. The right-handed batter got out on the last ball of the 50th over as he put India in an advantageous position with regular strikes.
The rain halted the proceedings of the match and the target was revised to 274 for the home side. However, the Men in Blue were clinical in their bowling as they bundled out West Indies for just 171 all out in 34 overs. None of the West Indies batters played a big knock for the Men in Maroon as they lost the match by a margin of 100+ runs. Kohli was adjudged player of the match for his excellent hundred.
