World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill to rejoin team in Ahmedabad
Shubman Gill is set to join Men in Blue in Ahmedabad. However, his participation for the highly-anticipated clash between India and Pakistan in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup is still uncertain. The match will be contested at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
After missing India’s opening match against Australia, Gill did not travel to Delhi for the side’s second game in the ongoing tournament. He was admitted to a hospital in Chennai for a night and was subsequently discharged.
“Gill is doing fine and is set to leave Chennai for Ahmedabad today. It is still not clear whether Gill will have a light training session at Motera on Thursday. His recovery has been fine but can’t really be sure if he can play against Pakistan,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
India opened the innings with Ishan Kishan alongside Rohit Sharma in the match against Australia. The two-time champions were reduced to 2/3 while chasing a below-par 200 runs. Kishan, Rohit, and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed for ducks. However, Virat Kohli and KL led the charge for their side and chased down the target.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekkar expressed his disappointment with Gill missing games in his debut World Cup. He added that the team is stronger with or without him given their performance in the clash against Australia. He did, however, admit that Gill’s presence would make the team stronger and it is the worst possible time for him to miss matches in an important tournament.
“Shubman Gill just makes the team even more stronger and with the kind of form that he has been in, you want to cash in. This is the worst possible time that you want to miss matches and it’s been beyond his control,” Manjrekar had said.
Gill is the leading run-scorer in ODIs so far this year with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35. The 24-year-old has hit two centuries and a fifty in his last four matches in the 50-over format.
