World Cup 2023: Australia Preview – Cummins and co hope for a repeat of 87
Australia are the most successful team in the history of the ODI World Cup. They have won the coveted title on five occasions. Their last winning campaign came in the 2015 edition on home soil. This year, Pat Cummins will lead the side, and they are one of the strongest contenders to, at least, make it to the semifinals. The ‘Men in Yellow’ are coming into the marquee event on the back of five losses in their last six games. However, they are known to rise up to grand occasions and will be a difficult team to beat during the World Cup. The likes of Travis Head and Ashton Agar were injured prior to the tournament but Australia still have a formidable team that can go the distance. Australia will begin their campaign in the 10-team tournament when they face India in Chennai on October 8.
Past performance
In the 2019 edition of the ODI World Cup, Australia finished in the second position, in the points table, after the league stage, with seven wins and two losses. In the semifinals, they faced England in Birmingham. After bundling out the Aussies for just 223, England chased down the score in just 32.1 overs to qualify for the finals.
Stat attack
Australia have the longest unbeaten streak in the history of the ODI World Cup. They were unbeaten for 34 games between 1999 and 2011. The exceptional streak ended against Pakistan in the 2011 World Cup.
