West Indies announces 15-member squad for South Africa Tests
With a touch under five days remaining until the commencement of the two-match series against South Africa, West Indies have unveiled their 15-member squad along with the coaching and support staff.
They have retained a largely similar squad with a few adjustments from their recent tour of England, where Kraigg Brathwaite and Joshua Da Silva serve as captain and vice-captain, respectively. Their regular deputy skipper, Alzarri Joseph, is missing out as he has been rested. They will be aiming for a more robust performance than their previous series, which ended in a 3-0 defeat against England.
The individuals not featured in the England tour but have been named for the series against the Proteas include Keacy Carty, Bryan Charles, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrican. While Greaves and Warrican have previously represented the Men in Maroon in two and 15 Test matches, respectively, both Carty and Charles are yet to make their debut in the red-ball format.
Head coach Andre Coley expressed satisfaction with the squad selection, emphasizing the strategic blend of established performers and recruits aimed at optimizing performance across the two different venues for the Tests. He also mentioned the decision to rest Alzarri due to his recent excessive workload, expressing confidence that the break would allow him to return to his optimal level. Additionally, Coley noted that off-spinner, Kevin Sinclair, was currently recuperating from an affliction.
“The squad we have chosen for this series is a balanced mix of experience and youth, strategically selected to maximize our performance in the conditions of Trinidad and Guyana. We have decided to rest our vice-captain Alzarri Joseph for this series. Alzarri has had a considerable workload recently, and this break will allow him to recuperate and return to peak performance. Kevin Sinclair is presently recovering from an injury,” stated Coley.
