As the world prepares to bid farewell to one of its greatest fast bowlers, James Anderson is set to play his final Test match for England against the West Indies at Lord’s on Wednesday, July 10.

The opening day of the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s was marked by a special moment as Anderson’s family rang the ceremonial bell, signaling the imminent start of play. The bell, located outside the Bowlers’ Bar of the Lord’s Pavilion, has become a cherished tradition in Test cricket.

Anderson’s retirement marks the end of an era in English cricket. Having made his international debut in 2002, he has witnessed the sport’s evolution from the dominance of Test cricket to the rise of T20 leagues. As he prepares for his 188th Test, the right-arm quick has an astounding 700 Test wickets to his name. He needs just 13 more to become the first fast bowler and third cricketer overall to reach 1000 international wickets. Even nine wickets in his farewell Test would see him surpass Shane Warne’s tally of 708, securing his place as the second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history.

England won the toss and chose to field first against West Indies at Lord’s

Notably, the day began with James Anderson leading out the England team one last time. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first, giving Anderson an immediate chance to add to his wicket tally.

The match also saw wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith and bowler Gus Atkinson receiving their Test caps. At the toss, England captain Ben Stokes paid tribute to Anderson’s professionalism and passion.

“What we can expect from Jimmy is complete heart, desire, and passion to go out there and win games for England… Jimmy is the ultimate professional,” Stokes said at the toss.
