Do you know the only three instances when India has won a Test despite scoring 150 or less?
It’s extremely difficult for any side to win a Test match despite scoring less than 150 runs in the first innings. India has done it on three occasions when they defied all the odds and pulled off a heist. When did this happen? Let’s find out:
3. India vs Australia, 2004
It was first in 2004 when India scored less than 150 runs in the first innings and went on to win the Test match. In that game against Australia, the hosts registered only 104 runs in the first innings. Captain Rahul Dravid with 31 runs posted the highest individual total. Meanwhile, the bowlers did a commendable job in the second innings as Anil Kumble struck five while Murali Karthik picked four as Australia was restricted to 203. India made 205 in the third innings and bundled Australia to only 93 in the fourth. They won the game by only 13 runs as Harbhajan picked five while Karthik notched three in the second innings.
2. India vs England, 2021
England were bundled for 112 runs in the Day-Night Test against India in Ahmedabad in 2021. Zak Crawley made 53 runs while Axar Patel picked up a six-wicket haul. In reply, India made only 145 runs. England were bundled for 81 runs only in the third innings as the Virat Kohli-led side chased 49 runs with ease in the fourth innings to win the game by 10 wickets. Axar was adjudged Player of the Match for picking 11 wickets in the match.
1. Australia vs India, 2024
India was bundled for 150 runs in the first innings against Australia in Perth. However, the bowlers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah, picked up a five-for and restricted the hosts to 104 runs. India batted well in the third innings, scoring 487/6 and bundled Australia for 238 runs. The Jasprit Bumrah-led side picked up a massive 295-run win and took a 1-0 lead in the series.
