Sydney Sixers to challenge Tom Curran’s four-match ban
Sydney Sixers have decided to stand by their player, Tom Curran, after the English pacer was slapped with a four-match suspension for allegedly intimidating an umpire during a Big Bash League (BBL) encounter against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 11 in Launceston.
According to a statement from Cricket Australia (CA), the Code of Conduct Commissioner Adrian Anderson noted that Curran, who was performing a practice run-up before the match, was verbally instructed to not run onto the pitch by the umpire. However, the right-arm seamer went to the opposite end of the pitch and started another practice run. The umpire stood in his way to try and stop Curran in his tracks. But the pacer allegedly gestured umpire to move away. Eventually, the Sixers player ran in and the umpire had to move away to avoid a collision.
Subsequently, Curran was charged with a Level 3 offense. He has been issued with four Suspension Points under clause 2.17 of the CA Code of Conduct. Clause 2.17 relates to ‘Intimidation or attempted intimidation of an Umpire or Match Referee whether by language or conduct (including gestures) during a Match. However, the Sixers have decided to use their right to challenge the penalty. For the unversed, all parties have seven days to appeal the verdict from the Commissioner.
“Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision. We will support Tom during this period and look forward to him returning to the field.” Head of Sydney Sixers Rachael Haynes said in an official statement from the club.
Sydney Sixers off to a bright start in BBL 2023-24
The Sixers were one win away from reaching the summit clash last season. They lost to Brisbane Heat in the Challenger. This season, the Moises Henriques-led side has started promisingly. They have won their first two games against the Melbourne Renegades and the Hobart Hurricanes.
Sixers will be in action on Friday, December 22 as they take on the Adelaide Strikers in Sydney Cricket Ground.
