SL vs IND: 3rd ODI Review – Sri Lanka ends a 27-year wait as they claim ODI series
India and Sri Lanka approached the third ODI with markedly different objectives, as evidenced by their alterations to the playing XIs from the previous match. Sri Lanka once again won the toss and chose to bat with resolute confidence. On this occasion, the opening partnership between the Sri Lankan batters was notably robust, lasting nearly 20 overs. It was only when Axar Patel intervened that Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for a well-crafted 45, allowing Pant to secure his first catch upon his return to the 50-over format.
A well-paced second-wicket partnership between Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis appeared poised to elevate Sri Lanka’s total beyond their initial projection. However, it was Parag who intervened, with his two critical overs during the mid-phase stalling the momentum. Fernando, on the cusp of his fourth ODI century, fell agonisingly short by four runs, followed closely by the dismissal of skipper, Charith Asalanka, who was adjudged LBW as well.
The subsequent trio of batters failed to reach double figures, while Kamindu Mendis made a modest 23, pushing Sri Lanka to 248/7. Parag proved to be the most formidable, securing three wickets in his debut ODI.
The run-chase unfolded with a familiar sense of déjà vu as Rohit Sharma launched an aggressive assault. However, vice-captain Shubman Gill fell against with a lackluster performance, getting bowled after a reckless attempt to swing across the line at a delivery that was kept slightly low.
Rohit and Virat Kohli followed suit, with Pant also dismissed amidst their departures, all within a series of brief intervals. Axar and Shreyas Iyer fell in the same over as Dunith Wellalage breathed fire to leave the Indians reeling at 82/6 in the 13th over. Parag, who was looking good in his time at the crease, went back as well alongside Shivam Dube to leave India down in the drains at 101/8.
Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav attempted a valiant rescue mission, however, despite their efforts, the departure of Sundar for 30 and Kuldeep being trapped plumb in front proved to be the final nail in the coffin as Sri Lanka sealed a historic 110-run victory.

Best Batter – Avishka Fernando (96 off 102)
The opener has demonstrated remarkable progress throughout the ODI series. Following scores of 1 and 40, where Avishka exhibited an impeccable performance in the third encounter. His aggressive intent was strikingly evident, as he played with purpose. His superb 96-run innings, featuring nine boundaries and two sixes, was precisely the foundation his team required.
Best Bowler – Dunith Wellalage (5/27 in 5.2 overs)
The left-arm spinner once again wreaked havoc with his sharp turn and impeccable line and length, proving too formidable for the Indian batters. He registered his best bowling figures in ODIs, emerging as a key architect of Sri Lanka’s victory.

Two weeks from now, the Lankans will embark on a tour of England for a three-match Test series, while the Indian team will be hosting Bangladesh for a two-match Test series in September at home.
