Rohit Sharma shatters the world record for most sixes in international cricket
India captain Rohit Sharma was on a record-breaking spree during Match 9 of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. The opening batter came out to bat in fifth gear as he unleashed his beast mode on the Afghan bowlers.
Rohit first became the joint-fastest batter to score 1000 runs in ODI World Cup reaching the milestone in 19 innings. Before him, Australian opener David Warner also achieved the same feat during their game against India. He further etched his name in record books as he registered most sixes in international cricket by pulling Naveen ul Haq over deep square leg for a maximum. Rohit surpassed Chris Gayle’s tally of 553 international sixes and rose to the top of the list. Rohit now has 556 sixes to his name in international cricket from 473 innings.

The Indian opener went on to play a scintillating innings of 131 off 84 balls smashing 16 fours and five sixes. During his innings, he also registered the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in ODI World Cup reaching the landmark in just 63 balls. Rohit left behind Virender Sehwag who had achieved the feat in 81 balls vs Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma registers most hundreds in ODI World Cup history
The 36-year-old further became the batter with the most number of hundreds in the history of the ODI World Cup as he surpassed the three-figure mark seventh time in the history of the tournament leaving behind Sachin Tendulkar’s record of six hundreds.
Furthermore, Rohit also rose to the third spot in the list of most ODI hundreds as he registered his 31st hundred in the format leaving behind Ricky Ponting who has 30 centuries to his name. Courtesy of his stupendous innings, India went on to chase down the target of 273 in just 35 overs and won the match by eight wickets. The Indian captain was deservedly awarded Player of the Match as he helped India register their second win of the tournament.
