Reports: Rahul Dravid to mentor Lucknow in IPL 2024
As per reports, Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian team, might join Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2024. Talks are ongoing, pending discussions between him and BCCI post his term with Team India. The shift hinges on these conversations after his tenure ended with the ODI World Cup 2023. If all aligns, he could mentor LSG, marking a potential move from national to franchise cricket.
The former India captain assumed the men’s team head coach role post the 2021 T20 World Cup, signing a two-year contract until this year’s World Cup. Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, then BCCI leaders, persuaded him post Ravi Shastri’s tenure. While no ICC trophy came under Dravid’s guidance, India excelled in bilateral matches, showcasing a formidable performance.
As per Dainik Jagran, BCCI plans to meet the former Karnataka cricketer to discuss his future plans, but chances of him seeking an extension seem slim. Dravid is inclined to prioritize family time, challenging with Team India’s rigorous schedule and frequent travel commitments as head coach. Balancing these demands makes it unlikely for him to continue in the role.
Potential getaway for Dravid from International Cricket
An IPL franchise link proves beneficial: IPL’s concise duration of two months allows ‘The Wall’ to balance family time and coaching duties. LSG sought him previously but his Team India commitment intervened. If he steps down from the head coach position, a probable collaboration between him and LSG could be on the cards, offering him a chance to blend coaching and personal life.
LSG’s mentor slot opened after Gautam Gambhir’s shift to Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir’s influential role in team development for two years concluded as he returned to his former leadership at KKR. Separately, LSG bid farewell to head coach Andy Flower. The reins now pass to Justin Langer, potentially accompanied by Dravid if negotiations align, shaping a new era for Lucknow Super Giants.
