PAK vs SL Review – Rizwan powers Pakistan to WC-record chase
In the eighth match of the ICC World Cup 2023, Pakistan emerged victorious against Sri Lanka by six wickets. Pakistan now stands at 8-0 in terms of head-to-head wins against the side in World Cup history. This thrilling contest also witnessed the highest successful run-chase ever witnessed in the history of the World Cup.
The Sri Lankan team posted an impressive total of 344 thanks to remarkable centuries by Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108). Despite their late efforts to contain the Sri Lankan batting onslaught, Pakistan faced a daunting target. In their pursuit, Pakistan encountered early setbacks, losing both Imam (12) and captain Babar Azam (10) early.
However, Abdullah Shafique, entrusted with the opening position in place of Fakhar, exhibited fluent batting, while Rizwan overcame a shaky start to find his rhythm. The duo not only stabilized Pakistan’s innings but also increased the tempo, putting immense pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Pakistan was cruising towards victory, with Shafique scoring an impressive 113, before a moment of brilliance from Hemantha resulted in a stunning catch, breaking the 176-run partnership. Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, they couldn’t capitalize on this opportunity. Rizwan, despite battling cramps, showcased exceptional innings management skills and remained unbeaten until the end, guiding his team to a memorable six-wicket victory.
