PAK vs NZ Review: New Zealand outclass hosts in Champions Trophy opener

Pakistan’s title defense in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 got off to a disastrous start as they suffered a 60-run defeat against New Zealand at the National Stadium, Karachi. Asked to bat first, New Zealand posted a total of 320/5, courtesy of stunning centuries from Will Young (107) and Tom Latham (118*).

In response, Pakistan struggled early, with 22/2 after ten overs. Fakhar Zaman, forced to delay his entry due to an injury, failed to make an impact, while Babar Azam’s 64 (90) lacked intent. Despite a fighting knock of 69 (49) from Khushdil Shah, Pakistan was bundled out for 260 in 47.2 overs. William O’Rourke (3/39) and Mitchell Santner (3/66) were the pick of bowlers for New Zealand. With their net run rate taking a hit (-1.200), Pakistan now faces a must-win clash against India in Dubai.

Top Performers of the Match

Tom Latham (118* off 104)

Wicket-keeper batter Tom Latham played a crucial hand in this win. The southpaw with the bat scored an unbeaten 118 off 104 and stabilized the innings with Will Young after the side lost three early wickets. Their partnership of 118 runs got the side back in the hunt and set a tough total. Latham later on also accelerated his innings and made sure the scoring rate was in check.

Matt Henry (2/25)

The New Zealand pacer looked at his very best once again as he never let the Pakistani batter be settled and score runs freely. In his quota of 7.2 overs, he picked up the wickets of Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi. However, he was the most economical bowler with an economy rate of 3.40, including a maiden over.

What’s next for both teams?

New Zealand will take on Bangladesh in Match 6 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on February 24. On the other hand, Pakistan’s next game is against arch-rivals India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on February 23.
