West Indies and India have had some classic battles over the years and one of the epic games took place on this day (August 27) in 2016 in Lauderhill, Florida. A world record of 489 was scored on the day and it was a game to be remembered for a long time. The West Indies were put into bat first by the Indian skipper MS Dhoni after winning the toss with the fans arriving in huge numbers.
The openers Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis took advantage of the small boundaries at the venue and reached the 100-run mark in no time. Charles was dismissed after a 33 ball-79 which included seven sixes while Lewis reached a fantastic century. The left-handed opener got to his 100 off 49 deliveries with nine sixes and five fours.
Andre Russell (22) and Kieron Pollard (22) continued from where the openers left and took the total to 245 for 6 in their 20 overs. India’s fast bowlers Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah were all taken apart by the West Indies batters.
Chasing down a huge total, Ajinkya Rahane was removed early for 7 while star batter Virat Kohli was dismissed for a 9-ball 16. However, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul stitched an 89-run partnership for the third wicket in quick time. Pollard got rid of Rohit for a 28 ball-62 that involved four sixes and four fours at a strike rate of 221.43.
Rahul and Dhoni carried the momentum once Rohit was dismissed and kept finding the boundaries with the required run rate moving up. The Karnataka-lad brought up a magnificent century and took the side close to the target while Dhoni helped him with a 25-ball 43. With 8 needed off the last over, Dwayne Bravo bowled a terrific over and won the game for his side by just one run. Rahul ‘s unbeaten 51 ball-110 went in vain.
