ODI World Cup 2023 to decide Champions Trophy 2025 qualification

The ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has witnessed 29 matches so far as ten teams are giving their all to have their hands on the coveted trophy. However, apart from the elusive World Cup trophy, there’s something more at stake in the ongoing cricketing extravaganza as the participants of the Champions Trophy 2025 will also be determined in the ongoing tournament.

Notably, teams finishing in the top seven spots in the league stage of the ongoing World Cup will get direct qualification for the Champions Trophy along with the hosts Pakistan. According to reports, the qualification scenario for the event was finalized by the ICC Board in 2021.

However, according to ESPNCricinfo, the development has come as a surprise to numerous cricket boards who stated that they’re unaware of the qualification scenario for the next ICC ODI event. One of the major teams that is at a risk of missing out on the qualification for the event is the World Champions England who find themselves on the last spot on the points table with just one win from five matches.

Hence, the Jos Buttler-led side has a lot to play for in the remaining fixtures of the World Cup as they look to save their pride and also earn a spot in the Champions Trophy 2025. The Three Lions have three out of their four remaining games against India, Australia and Pakistan and will have to bring their A-game to the fore to rise above on the points table.

ODI Rankings decided Champions Trophy participants in 2013 and 2017

Meanwhile, the current qualification scenario is different from the one used for the previous two editions of the Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017 respectively. For the previous two editions, teams finishing in the top eight of the ICC ODI rankings at a cut-off date earned a direct qualification for the event. Pakistan are the current holders of the Champions Trophy having beaten India in the final of the previous edition in 2017.
