Most wickets in BGT history (Top 3)

The 2024-2025 Border-Gavaskar Trophy gets underway on November 22. India and Australia will face each other in a five-match Test series with important World Test Championship (WTC) points at stake. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is considered one of the most high-profile series in the game of cricket. Over the years, this contest has given rise to so many world-class cricketers that have left lasting impressions in the hearts of cricket aficionados. In this article, we take a look at the top three highest wicket-takers in the history of Border-Gavaskar Tests.

3. 111 – Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble is one of the finest leg-spinners to have played the game. He also had a penchant for producing some excellent performances against Australia, especially in the red-ball format. In 20 Tests against the Aussies, he took 111 wickets, the most he has against any particular nation. The 54-year-old has an average of 30.31 and a strike rate of 58.70 against Australia and best figures of 8/141 in an innings.

2. 114 – R Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin is only behind Anil Kumble in the list of leading wicket-takers for India in Test matches. However, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner has more wickets against Australia than his predecessor. Ashwin has picked up 114 wickets against the Aussies at an average of 28.36 and a strike rate of 62.80. The legendary cricketer has seven five-wicket hauls against the team from Down Under. He has best figures of 7/103 against Australia in an innings.

1. 116 – Nathan Lyon

Doing well as a spinner in the Australian cricketing setup isn’t easy as the pitches are not too responsive for this type of bowling. However, Nathan Lyon has managed to hold his own and build his legacy among the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, among others. Lyon has featured in 27 Tests against India and picked up 121 wickets at an average of 31.56 and a strike rate of 61.90. He has nine five-wicket hauls against the mighty Indians. His best figures in an innings (8/50) were recorded in the 2017 Bengaluru Test.
