Most runs in BGT history (Top 3)
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is one of the most highly-anticipated fixtures in the cricketing calendar as fans look forward to watching two cricketing powerhouses – India and Australia facing each other in the purest format of the game. The 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to begin on November 22.
Over the years, the cricket fraternity has witnessed some stellar performances from the batters who have played in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In this article, we take a look at the top three leading run-getters in the India-Australia rivalry’s history.
3. 2434 – VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman and his love affair with Australia was quite extraordinary. The stylish Hyderabad batter used to bring out his A-game almost every time against the team from Down Under. His remarkable knock of 281 at the Eden Gardens in 2001 booked a permanent spot in cricketing folklore. Laxman scored 2,434 runs against Australia from 54 innings at an average of 49.67. He also notched up six centuries and 12 half-centuries against the Aussies.
2. 2555 – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting played some sensational knocks against India across formats. His epic century in the 2003 ODI World Cup final sometimes overshadows how successful he was against India in the Test format. The soon-to-be 50-year-old amassed 2,555 runs against the Asian giants from 51 innings at an average of 54.36. He registered eight centuries and 12 half-centuries against the Men in Blue. Ponting is now the official head coach of Punjab Kings in IPL 2025.
1. 3262 – Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar is unarguably one of the best batters to have ever played the game. He faced some of the most fearsome and tough bowlers in Australian cricket during their prime and dominated them like only he could have. In 74 innings, Sachin slammed a whopping 3,630 runs at a staggering average of 55. The Little Master scored 11 centuries and 14 half-centuries during his time playing for India against Australia in red-ball cricket. This included an iconic highest score of 241* in January 2004 in Sydney.
