Most extras conceded in a World Cup innings

The ODI World Cup 2023 has produced some intense action in the early goings and fans have loved every bit of it. Teams like India and New Zealand have started brightly while the likes of England and Australia will have to do some catch-up. One thing that has let some teams down is bowling too many extras. In a game of fine margins, free runs are the last thing that teams want to give to their opposition. In this article, we will take a look at the most extras conceded in an innings by teams.

3) 23 – SL vs SA

South African batters posted 428/5 in their 50 overs, the highest total in the history of World Cups, against Sri Lanka in Delhi. The Proteas went past Australia’s record of 417 runs against Afghanistan in the 2015 ODI World Cup. Temba Bavuma’s men were helped with 23 extras from the inexperienced Sri Lankan bowlers. In reply, Dasun Shanaka’s men fell 102 runs short.

2) 26 – SL vs PAK

Pakistan and Sri Lanka played one of the most interesting matches of the 2023 edition of the tournament in Hyderabad. The ‘Men in Green’ recorded the highest successful run-chase in World Cup history as they reached the mammoth 345-run target set by Sri Lanka in the penultimate over. Sri Lanka conceded 26 extras in the innings and made life easier for Pakistan. 25 runs out of the 26 extras came in wides.

1) 32 – NED vs SA

South Africa registered a couple of dominating wins against Sri Lanka and Australia to start the tournament and fans believed that they would blow away the Netherlands in Dharamsala. However, the Proteas bowling was way below-par as they conceded 32 runs in extras and went on to lose the match by 38 runs. The story could have been completely different had South Africa not bowled that many extras and helped the Dutch side post a formidable 246-run target in a rain-curtailed 43-overs per-side contest.
