Michael Vaughan foresees Rohit Sharma’s shift after IPL 2024
After all the saga amid the baton of captaincy being handed over to former skipper of the Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya, amid his return to the Mumbai Indians, there has been speculation floating around Rohit Sharma switching franchises. One of the top picks for many has been the Chennai Super Kings, considering the ongoing season of the IPL to be stalwart MS Dhoni’s last.
The theory made up by various MI and Rohit supporters might just bear fruition, with one legend making his way out of the franchise, and another one filling up for him. While appearing on the BeerBiceps podcast, former English cricketer Michael Vaughan touched upon the same conundrum. Vaughan felt that the act of handing over the role of leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad could just be a stopgap solution, and with Dhoni departing, Rohit could very well be in contention to take up the mantle from the next season.
“Will he (Rohit Sharma) go to Chennai? Replace Dhoni? Gaikwad is doing it (the captaincy) this year, and it might be just (an act of) holding position for Rohit next year. I see him in Chennai,” Vaughan said on the BeerBiceps podcast.
To this, the host of the podcast, Ranveer Allahbadia, stated that it’d be heart-rending if that were to transpire. Ranveer opined that it’d be much better if Rohit goes over to play for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, owing to him already having featured for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010.
“That’d be heartbreaking, honestly. For MI fans, that’d be terrible. I wouldn’t mind him going to (Sunrisers) Hyderabad; he played for Deccan Chargers, so that would be romantic,” Ranveer said.

In the same podcast, Vaughan also pointed out how he felt there was a lack of communication between the management, and that Rohit should’ve led the side even after Hardik’s arrival. He felt that getting offered the role of being the skipper of MI wouldn’t be turned down by many. It’d have been more rational if Rohit was assumed the skipper of MI, keeping Hardik in the loop for the next couple of years.
“He has been asked to captain Mumbai Indians; who is going to say no to that? He has been given a job that every single Indian cricketer would like to do. I just believe the communication wasn’t right. I personally would’ve captained Rohit. The sensible move would’ve been for Rohit to carry on as MI captain with Hardik in mind for next year or 2,” Vaughan said.
