MI vs RCB Review: Bengaluru breaks decade-long Wankhede jinx

Match 20 of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinch victory by 12 runs against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, April 7. This victory marked RCB’s third victory of the season.

Apart from Trent Boult scalping Phil Salt (four off two) on the second delivery of the game, it was RCB’s powerplay with the visitors getting to 73/1 at the end. Vignesh Puthur struck in his first over by dismissing Padikkal for a spirited 37-run knock but Kohli brought up a 29-ball half-century in the same over as RCB got to 100/2 at the end of 10 overs.

Mitchell Santner’s fourth over was hammered for 20 runs. The subsequent over yielded wickets of Kohli (67 off 42) and Liam Livingstone (zero off two). Hardik Pandya was taken to the cleaners in his final over. Rajat Patidar was dismissed for a power-packed 64-run knock while Jitesh Sharma’s unbeaten 40* (19) led RCB to end up on 221/5. Jasprit Bumrah conceded only 29 runs in his four-over spell upon his return to action.

For the first 10 overs in MI’s run-chase, RCB was in firm control with the ball. Coming in as an Impact Player, Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 17 (9) while his partner Ryan Rickelton departed for the same score a couple of overs later. A bouncer by Krunal Pandya saw Will Jacks’ back whereas Suryakumar Yadav‘s dismissal for 28 off 26 deliveries brought Hardik to the crease.

Overs 13-15 resulted in 58 runs being scored, with Tilak Verma and Hardik taking the attack to the opposition. Tilak was dismissed for 56 an over after he got to his half-century and Josh Hazlewood’s final over brought about the dismissal of Hardik, who departed for a blazing 42-run knock off merely 15 balls. Krunal was successful in defending 19 in the final over, ending up with a career-best four-wicket haul to his name.

Top Performers of the match

Virat Kohli (67 off 42)

The ace batter’s composed yet aggressive knock laid the platform for his side. He looked equally comfortable while rotating the strike and hitting the big shots.

Krunal Pandya (4/45 in four overs)

It was courtesy of the ex-MI player that MI fell flat towards the end. An excellent final over after conceding 39 off his first three gifted RCB a crucial victory.

MI will take on Delhi Capitals in Delhi on Sunday, April 13. RCB are scheduled to take on the same opposition in their backyard in Bengaluru on Thursday, April 10. Both games are scheduled to commence at 7:30 pm (IST).
