Jos Buttler wishes to continue as England’s white-ball captain

Jos Buttler was made England’s captain in white-ball cricket after Eoin Morgan’s retirement. Under the star wicketkeeper-batter’s leadership, England won the T20 World Cup for the second time last year. Buttler was expected to take England deep into the ODI World Cup 2023. But, the defending champions have not been able to live up to their potential.

England have just managed to win two games and lost six so far and were eliminated a long time back. They managed to end a five-match losing streak on Wednesday, November 8. They defeated the Netherlands by 160 runs to move out from the bottom of the points table. England now rest on the seventh spot with one game left to play.

After the much-needed win against the Dutch side, Buttler, who has just scored 111 runs at a paltry average of 13.88 in eight games, expressed his frustration with his dismal form but said that he would like to continue leading the English team in white-ball cricket.

“I’d like to [lead in the Caribbean]. I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I’d like to. You want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance,” he said. “I’ll stick to the stuff that’s served me well over a long period of time when I’ve had these little runs of form and hopefully I’ll come out the other side of it very soon,” Buttler was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

It is important to note that after the World Cup, England have a tour to the Caribbean. England’s managing director of men’s cricket – Rob Key was with the team earlier in the tournament and has returned to meet the team in Kolkata. Buttler and Co. will face Pakistan in their last World Cup game on Saturday, November 11. Key is going to have a discussion with Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott before deciding on the team that will face the West Indies.

“If you watched training yesterday, the guys probably trained as hard as they have trained all trip, which shows the level of commitment and desire to put things right. It would be easy for us to tail off… credit to everyone for still putting [effort] in and showing how much it means to play for England and the pride in our performance. Of course, the Champions Trophy is something we’re very focused on and determined to make sure we’re there,” Buttler added.
