Indian batters playing spin better is a misconception: Simon Doull

Simon Doull, the former New Zealand pacer, recently addressed a common misconception regarding Indian batters’ ability to handle spin bowling. He argued that while Indian cricketers are often labeled as adept at playing spin, this perception is overly simplistic. Doull emphasized that not all Indian players excel against spin, pointing to the increasing success of various international teams in adapting to and countering spin bowling. He expressed concern that this narrative can overshadow the actual challenges faced by Indian batsmen, particularly when they encounter quality spin on turning tracks.

Doull elaborated on this topic during a commentary session, where he noted that players like Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal are emerging as some of the best in the format, showcasing their potential with impressive performances. However, he stressed the importance of recognizing that spin bowling remains a formidable challenge for many players, regardless of their nationality. According to Doull, the focus should shift to improving players’ techniques and approaches rather than relying on stereotypes about their proficiency against spin.

“I think it is a misconception around the world now that these modern Indian players are better playing spin than anyone else. They are not. They are the same as everyone else around the world. Gone are the days of Ganguly, Gambhir, Laxman and Dravid. Sachin was so, so good against spin, and the era before them. I think good quality spinners are just as good as getting India out on turning tracks as Indian spinners against good quality opposition batters. And the moment they see a turning track in the IPL, they complain,” stated Doull on JioCinema during Lunch break on the second day.
