India announces squad for Champions Trophy & England ODIs

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Veteran opener Rohit Sharma will lead the team, continuing his role as captain in the 50-over format. Despite being sidelined in the final Test against Australia, Sharma’s leadership in limited-overs cricket remains pivotal for India’s campaign.
The squad sees the return of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who had been under scrutiny due to a back spasm suffered during the Sydney Test against Australia. His inclusion is, however, subject to fitness assessments, with selectors keen on him participating in at least one competitive match before the tournament to confirm his readiness.
Notably, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been omitted from the Champions Trophy squad. Reports suggest that his absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy did not sit well with the selectors, leading to his exclusion. In contrast, Karun Nair, who showcased exceptional form in domestic cricket with 752 runs in eight matches, including five centuries, was considered but ultimately not included, as selectors felt it unwise to recall him just before a major tournament.
The batting lineup features stars like Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, with Yashasvi Jaiswal providing additional top-order options. The middle order is bolstered by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who also serve as backup wicketkeepers. All-rounders Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja add depth to both batting and bowling departments. The spin contingent includes Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, while Mohammed Shami and the emerging talent of Arshdeep Singh strengthen the pace attack.
India’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence on February 20 against Bangladesh. The team aims to leverage a blend of experienced players and promising newcomers to reclaim the title, having previously won the tournament in 2002 and 2013.
