IND vs NZ: Kane Williamson to miss final test in Mumbai
New Zealand’s Kane Williamson will miss the final Test against India in Mumbai due to a lingering groin strain he suffered in a recent series against Sri Lanka. This injury, compounded by prior setbacks, has kept him out for most of New Zealand’s current tour. Head coach Gary Stead emphasized that while Williamson’s recovery is on track, the team remains cautious, aiming for a full rehabilitation to avoid worsening the injury.
“Kane continues to show good signs, but isn’t quite ready to jump on a plane and join us. While things are looking promising, we think the best course of action is for him to stay in New Zealand and focus on the final part of his rehabilitation so he’ll be good to go for England,” head coach Gary Stead said in a release.
In Williamson’s absence, Will Young has stepped in, performing solidly in the top order. Young’s presence has offered stability to New Zealand’s lineup, scoring valuable runs, though the team undoubtedly feels the absence of Williamson’s experience and leadership. The Black Caps have managed without him in recent matches, but his return is eagerly anticipated for future series.
This isn’t Williamson’s first time dealing with prolonged injuries. In the past two years, he’s faced elbow and knee issues that sidelined him during key tournaments, most recently in the ODI World Cup due to a fractured thumb. The team’s medical staff remains hopeful for a smooth recovery, with his potential return aligning with New Zealand’s upcoming series against England.
