IND vs ENG: 2nd Test, Day 2 Talking Points – Bumrah’s dominance dismantles England
India finished Day 2 of the second Test on top as they are leading England by 171 runs with both openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease in the second innings. Earlier in the day, the hosts added 60 runs to their overnight score of 336 and got bundled out for 396 in the first innings. The Rohit Sharma-led side further bundled out England for 253 in their first innings as Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with the ball.
Here are the talking points from Day 2:
1. Yashavi Jaiswal becomes the third youngest Indian to score a Test double-hundred
Yashasvi Jaiswal resumed his innings on the overnight score of 179 and completed his double century in style as he smacked a six and a boundary against Shoaib Bashir. With his knock, the 22-year-old became the third youngest Indian to achieve the feat after Vinod Kambli and Sunil Gavaskar. Jaiswal smacked 19 fours and seven sixes in his innings as he was the lone warrior in the Indian innings.
2. Jasprit Bumrah dismantles England
After the fall of the second wicket, India captain Rohit Sharma brought Jasprit Bumrah back into the spell to bowl against Joe Root. The speedster didn’t disappoint as he set him up beautifully and made him edge straight to second slip, dismissing him for 5. He further annihilated England’s hero from the first Test Ollie Pope’s stumps with a searing inswinging yorker. Bumrah (6/45) also got the big scalp of Jonny Bairstow (25 off 39) and Ben Stokes (47 off 54) and tailenders Tom Hartley and James Anderson to complete his six-fer.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin goes wicketless
India’s premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin did not have a memorable outing in the day as he went wicketless after bowling 12 overs. The off-spinner was taken to the cleaners by the England batters as he leaked 61 runs in 12 overs at an economy of 5.10.
