Centuries galore: Most 100s at a venue in a single World Cup
There are some grounds where the players like to score runs and score heavily in a particular series or a major tournament. Some of the stadiums have witnessed hundreds after hundreds of different batters in showpiece events like the one-day international World Cup. In this global competition, two grounds have produced joint-most centuries from cricketers in different editions and they feature in this article.
Let’s take a look at the venue with the most tons in a single edition of the ODI World Cup:
Manchester (6 in 2019)
The fifteenth edition of the ODI World Cup was held in England and Wales. The tournament was won by the host nation England as they defeated the mighty New Zealand side in a thrilling and epic final at the Lord’s. The summit clash ended up in a tie and even the super-over ended with the same result but the home side won it on a boundary count.
In that campaign, the Old Trafford in Manchester witnessed a total of six hundred from different players. India’s Rohit Sharma was the first one to achieve the feat as he hammered 140 off just 113 against arch-rivals Pakistan. England skipper Eoin Morgan was the second one as he smashed 148 off 71 with 17 maximums against Afghanistan a couple of days later.
Following that, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson racked up the same runs (148) off 154 against West Indies four days later. In the same match, Carlos Brathwaite played a blinder of 101 off 82 but just fell short to take his side over the line. Two weeks later, Australia’s David Warner struck 122 off 117 against South Africa while the last player was Faf du Plessis, who hit 100 off 94 against the Aussies in the same encounter.
Delhi (6 in 2023)
The sixteenth edition of the World Cup is underway in India and ten sides are battling it out to book their place in the final four. The capital city, Delhi has already witnessed some spectacular knocks from different players and a total of six centuries have been hit so far at the venue.
The trio of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram began the proceedings as they all slammed their respective tons in the same fixture against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Wicketkeeper batter de Kock smacked 100 off just 84 while der Dussen mustered 108 off 110; Markram slammed a century in no time as he amassed 106 off 54.
India captain Rohit was the fourth player to reach the three-figure mark at the venue. He grabbed the feat by scoring 131 off 84 against Afghanistan. The Aussie duo of Warner and Glenn Maxwell also made their presence felt in Delhi where they hit their respective tons against the Netherlands. The former scored 104 off 93 while Maxwell hammered the fastest-ever century in the history of ODI World Cups in just 40 deliveries. He ended up with a blitz knock of 106 off 44.
