AUS vs IND: 4th Test Review – Australia go 2-1 up after MCG win

The fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Melbourne ended in an 184-run win for Australia as they will go to Sydney 2-1 for the fifth and final Test. Australia broke India’s MCG streak with a dominating victory on Day 5 of the Test.

Chasing 340 on the final day, India struggled again, losing Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli cheaply. However, an 88-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant gave the tourists some hope. However, eventually, Australia denied Yashasvi Jaiswal a well-deserved century and bowled India out for 155 in 79.1 overs.

Earlier in the game, the hosts had impressive performances with the bat, from Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Pat Cummins. For India Jasprit Bumrah was once again the best bowler. Nitish Kumar Reddy also grabbed headlines with his maiden Test century in the first innings.

Top Performers of the Match

Best Batter – Yashasvi Jaiswal (82 and 84)

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal once again impressed with his bat. After a brilliant ton in the opening Test in Perth, the southpaw had a brilliant game, managing 80-plus scores in both innings. The youngster put up a good partnership with Virat Kohli in the first innings but lost his wicket due to an unfortunate mix-up. Later in the game, Jaiswal once again shone with the bat, scoring another solid fifty.

Best bowler – Jasprit Bumrah (4/99 and 5/57)

Jasprit Bumrah was once again the best performer for India, claiming match figures of 9/156. The right-arm pacer recorded history in this game as he became the fastest Indian pacer to register 200 Test wickets after dismissing Travis Head on the fourth day. Bumrah’s four-wicket haul in the first innings featured the demolition of top-order batters, including key wickets like Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, and Head. He continued his domination in Australia’s second innings, picking his 13th five-wicket haul. With this, the 31-year-old has now bagged 30 wickets in eight innings.

What’s next for both teams?

With this win, Australia goes 2-1 in the five-match series. Both sides will now take on each other in the fifth and final Test at Sydney from January 3-7, 2025.
