Asha Sobhana opens up after T20 World Cup selection

Asha Sobhana was nowhere in the scheme of things for the Indian team before the Women’s Premier League earlier in the year. The team management was happy with Saika Ishaque, Deepti Sharma, and Radha Yadav but Sobhana hogged into the limelight during the WPL 2024, where she picked up 12 wickets in 10 matches and finished as the second-leading wicket-taker of the tournament.

After that, she represented India in three T20Is and picked up four wickets at an economy of 7.45. Looking at her contribution and success in spin-friendly pitches, the team management backed Asha for the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup, slated to begin on October 3. Revealing her excitement after the call-up, the 33-year-old stated that she got to know about it via the BCCI app.

She talked about her journey and stated that winning the World Cup is her dream and wants to do well whenever the Kerala-born cricketer gets to represent the national team.

“Like everyone, I just got to know from the BCCI app, got the notification. I am very happy because I had worked very hard for this. It’s a very big thing I know and I am looking forward to doing my best. Winning the World Cup is everyone’s dream. I want to do my best for my country whenever I get a chance,” Asha told India.com.

“It’s all about the way you see things. Of course, I was a little late to come to this stage but I don’t see myself as a little old and I have to be careful. I just remind myself that I am a cricketer and I have to do my best as long as I play cricket,” she said when asked about her motivation.

India will be playing New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Australia in the group stage of the competition. The top two teams from the group will make it to the semi-finals.
