Amit Mishra opens up on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy saga in IPL 2024
Rohit Sharma was stripped off as Mumbai Indians’ captain ahead of the Indian Premier League 2024. The franchise brought back Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans in a record trade and he was subsequently named the captain. While Rohit seemed unbothered during the league, former Indian spinner, Amit Mishra thought otherwise.
Mishra, who plays for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL and is also a good friend of Rohit, expressed that the latter for unhappy throughout the tournament. The India opener led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles and is at par with legendary captain MS Dhoni in the trophy count. Mishra cushioned his opinion on this very aspect and also criticized the MI owners for overlooking the achievement of Mumbaikar.
“I will not say that Rohit Sharma was happy in IPL. I will say that Rohit Sharma was not happy. That is what I felt. Although he did not show to anyone, but when a person has won you 5 trophies, then I would say that you should have brought Hardik but made him the vice-captain. First make him the vice-captain for one year and then give him the captaincy,” said Mishra on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube Channel.
“You should have made things clear to Rohit Sharma that this year you are the captain but from next year Hardik Pandya will captain. Rohit Sharma was completely disappointed with this thing, because he is a very emotional person,” he added.
Talking about Rohit’s batting in the IPL, he had a subdued IPL outing as per his standards. He amassed 417 runs in 14 innings at an average of 32.08 and a highest score of an unbeaten 105 against Chennai Super Kings in the losing cause. Thereafter his form dipped and he only came among the runs in the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Australia. He eventually led India to their second T20 title and became the only third Indian captain after Kapil Devi and Dhoni to lift the World Cup.
