New Zealand declare spin-heavy Test squad to take on Sri Lanka
New Zealand have announced a spin-heavy Test squad for their tour of Sri Lanka commencing on August 14 in Galle. New Zealand will play two Test matches in the island nation, which will also mark the beginning of the World Test Championship for both the sides.
In order to counter the dust bowls often seen in Sri Lanka during Test matches, the Kiwis have opted to name four spinners in their squad. Off-spinner Will Somerville, left-arm spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner and leg-spinner Todd Astle all feature in the squad. The selectors have also opted to name only three seamers in the squad, with Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner getting the nod. Lockie Ferguson who enjoyed an exceptional World Cup campaign will have to wait for his Test debut.
The batting unit will again be led by skipper Kane Williamson. The likes of Tom Latham, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls providing him with some able support. Tom Blundell and BJ Watling are the two wicketkeeper-batsmen named in the squad.
Head coach Gary Stead said on spin-heavy nature of the squad:
“Playing three spinners is an option in Sri Lankan conditions and we believe this group provides the best variations and skill mix on offer. England were playing three spinners against Sri Lanka on their successful visit there last year and the slow bowlers also dominated the previous series against South Africa.”
