Muttiah Muralitharan undergoes angioplasty in Chennai after cardiac issues
Sri Lankan legend and Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach, Muttiah Muralitharan has been admitted to a private hospital in Chennai after facing cardiac issues. He is understood to have undergone angioplasty and reports suggest that he is stable.
ESPNcricinfo reported that the veteran off-spinner “had a stent fitted to unblock an artery, and will rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad when discharged”. Muralitharan is currently in India as part of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s coaching staff for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As per the Sunrisers Hyderabad management, Murali had gone for a check-up and received medical advice for the treatment immediately. After he is treated and discharged from the hospital, the 49-year-old will have to undergo a mandatory seven-day quarantine following the BCCI’s SOPs before he is allowed to enter the team’s bio-bubble for the remainder of the IPL season.

“He had consulted doctors in Sri Lanka over blockage in his heart before coming for the IPL. He was initially told there was no need for any stents but at the Apollo Hospital here in Chennai, he was advised angioplasty. He immediately got it done,” Shanmuganathan, the CEO of the Sunrisers, communicated on Sunday night. “He is very much fine and he should back in the ground in a few days.” the CEO added.
The 49-year-old is the leading wicket-taker in international cricket with a whopping 1347 scalps. Muralitharan represented Sri Lanka in 133 Tests, 350 ODIs, and 12 T20 Internationals, amassing a staggering 800 wickets in the longest format, 534 in the ODIs, and 13 in the T20s. He also holds the record for bagging most five-wicket hauls (67) and ten-wicket (22) hauls Tests, while with 10 fifers in One Day Internationals, he is only behind Waqar Younis’ tally of 13.
Murali, who was a part of Sri Lanka’s ODI World Cup triumph in 1996, has taken up different roles in the sport after retirement, with the stint of being the bowling coach and mentor of the Sunrisers Hyderabad running since 2015. His franchise has undergone three defeats in the season in as many games and will be facing Punjab Kings on 21st April 2021.
