Mumbai Indians give a fitting tribute to Lasith Malinga post his retirement

After having quite an incredible career in cricket, Lasith Malinga has decided to quit all forms of cricket. The Sri Lankan fast-bowler announced his retirement from all forms of the game on Tuesday, September 14. He thanked each of his T20 franchises, for whom he played during his playing career.

When it comes to T20 cricket, Lasith Malinga’s name is synonymous with Mumbai Indians. The 38-year-old pacer never played for any other franchise in the IPL other than the five-time champions. He was first bought by the franchise in the inaugural season in 2008. He was ruled out of that season and returned to play for them in 2009.

Since then, he had been a regular member of the franchise until the 2020 season. He played a total of 122 matches for Mumbai in the IPL and was a part of four of the franchise’s five triumphs. He has picked up a record 170 wickets for them as well. As the legendary pacer announced his retirement, Mumbai Indians thanked him for his services.

In the video through which Malinga announced his decision to retire from T20 cricket officially, he thanked Mumbai Indians for the support which they showed him. Mumbai Indians’ social media team replied to that tweet from Malinga reminding fans about the famous chants which filled the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during the home games of the franchise.

Lasith Malinga will retire as the highest wicket-taker in the league’s history. With 166 wickets, Amit Mishra sits second on the list, but Malinga’s numbers are quite unreal. He was the purple cap holder in the 2011 season as well, when he picked up 28 wickets in 16 matches.
