MS Dhoni to serve Indian Army in Kashmir

Making the most of his break from international cricket, former India captain MS Dhoni will be serving the Indian Army in Kashmir. He will be stationed in the valley for 15 days from July 31 to August 15. The Lieutenant Colonel will take over the duties of patrolling, guard and post duty as part of Victor Force.

The 38-year-old World Cup-winning captain will be staying with the troops during his service. He has already begun his 2-month training with the Parachute Regiment in Bengaluru.

A spokesperson of the Indian Army confirmed the news of his posting:

“As requested by the officer and approved by Army Headquarters, he will be performing duties of patrolling among other such activities and would be staying with the troops.”

In 2011, the Indian Army had bestowed an honorary rank of ‘Lieutenant Colonel’ on Dhoni. in 2015, he became a qualified paratrooper after completing five parachute jumps as part of his training.

Despite reports of his retirement, there has been no official announcement from the cricketer since India’s shock World Cup exit. Reports suggest that the team management wants Dhoni in the setup till 2020 to groom the younger team members.

Earlier this month, the wicket-keeper-batsman opted out of the West Indies tour. In his absence, Team India will rely on the services of Wriddhiman Saha and Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.
