Most wins in international cricket in calendar year
Australia dominated world cricket by winning three consecutive ICC World Cups from 1999-2007 and nine consecutive Test series wins during the 2005/06 season. But now, India are the only team to rank in the top-three of all three formats in the current ICC charts. This clearly states their dominance across formats, which has helped them win 38 international matches in 2022, with two-and-half months still remaining. On that note, let’s take a look at the teams with most wins in international cricket in calendar year across formats.
3. India (37 wins, 2017)
In earlier 2017, India announced Virat Kohli as the new captain for the white-ball team and results were quick to pour. India won 37 international matches from the played 53 fixtures to set the best calendar year in terms of number of wins. India lost 12 and draw four matches, and suffered a heart-breaking defeat against Pakistan in the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. But the Indian team remained unbeaten in bilateral series and won nine consecutive Test series to equal Australia’s record during the 2005-06 season.
2. Australia (38 wins, 2003)
Australia dominated both Test and ODI cricket for more than a decade since lifting the 1999 World Cup. Their best performance came in 2003, when they won record 38 international matches in a calendar year. Australia won 30 out of 38 ODI matches, including the 2003 World Cup, and eight Tests from nine matches. Their best result came during the 2003 World Cup where Ricky Ponting’s team won all 13 matches to lift the famous trophy.
1. India (38* wins, 2022)
India have established themselves as a dominant force across formats for the last few years. They had poor outings in the 2022 Asia Cup but won the latest two bilateral series against Australia and South Africa to recover quickly. They won the third ODI clash against South Africa to seal the three-match series by 2-1 and equaled Australia’s record of most wins in a calendar year in international cricket. India have won 38 matches from the 55 played matches across formats and are set to break the record in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. India have won two Tests, 13 ODIs, and 23 T20I matches this year and will set a new record at the end of the year.
