Australia and England played the first-ever Test in 1877, and since then have played over 800 matches each. Indian team has played 565 Test matches so far and is among only nations with more than 500 Tests. So, let’s take a look at top three countries with most number of Tests so far.
3. 568 – West Indies
West Indies are third in the chart of the most Tests played by a nation. They have played 568 Tests and have won just 181, drawn 179, and lost 206 with a winning percentage of 31.92. Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored over 11000 Test runs in Tests, with the former being only cricketer in the world to score 400 runs in an innings. Courtney Walsh leads the bowling chart with 519 Test wickets from 132 Tests for West Indies.
2. 849 – Australia
Australia, the current no.1 Test team, hold many team and individual records in red-ball cricket and have been dominant force for last two decades. They have played 849 Tests, winning a record 404, drawing 216, and losing 227 matches so far. They are most successful team in Test cricket with a winning percentage of 47.58. The former captain Ricky Ponting tops the scoring chart with 13378 runs and late Shane Warne leads with 708 wickets in Tests for Australia.
1. 1058 – England
Since playing the first ever Test in 1877, England have played 1058 Test matches, 209 more than Australia and 493 more than the Indian team. They have won 387, drawn 245, and lost 317 test matches so far. They are the third most successful team in Test cricket with a winning percentage of 36.57 so far. England played 15 Test matches in 2022, more than any team, with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow scoring over 1000 runs each.
