Most target runs chased in last 10 overs of ODI since 2001
Chasing down the target runs of over 100 runs successfully in the final ten overs of a one-day international is a rarity and it takes some effort from the team batting second. Batters have to go big right from the start of the final few overs to achieve the target. Few sides have managed to crack this in ODIs in the last few years and they appear in this list.
Let’s take a look at the most target runs chased in the last ten overs of an ODI since the year 2001:
4.India (100)
Team India is the latest entrant in this chart. The Men in Blue chased down the target of 100 runs against West Indies in the second of the three-match ODI series at Port of Spain in Trinidad in July 2022. The victory gave them a series win as they also occupy the fourth spot here. Chasing a target of 312, India was 212/5 at the end of 40th over with Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda not out on 12 and 20 respectively. The former ended up with an unbeaten 64 to take his side home by two wickets as India finished on 312/8 in 49.4 overs.
3.New Zealand (101)
New Zealand chased down the target of 101 runs against Ireland in the first of the three-match ODI series in Dublin in July 2022. Chasing 301, the Kiwis were 200/6 at the end of the 40th over with Michael Bracewell batting on 41 off 46. With 20 needed off the final over, Bracewell wreaked havoc by smashing 24 to win a thriller of a game by one wicket and with one ball to spare. New Zealand ended up with 305/9 on the board.
2.New Zealand (101)
The Blackcaps had chased down as many runs in the last ten overs against Australia in Christchurch in the year 2005. In the final game of the Chappell-Hadlee series in December 2005, New Zealand scripted a consolation win after already losing the series. Chasing 332, the Kiwis were 231/6 at the end of 40th over. They ended up with 332/8 in 49 overs with Brendon McCullum remaining unbeaten on 50 off 25 with the help of three fours and four maximums.
1.Pakistan (109)
Asian giants Pakistan tops the chart by chasing down 109 target-runs in the last ten overs. They achieved the feat against Bangladesh during the eighth match of the Asia Cup in Mirpur in 2014. Chasing 327, Pakistan were 218/4 at the end of the 40th over with Fawad Alam batting on 43. They ended up with 329/7 in 49.5 overs and won the match by three wickets. Alam amassed 74 but it was Shahid Afridi who turned the match on its head by smashing 59 off 25 with two fours and seven maximums.
