It is said that the Ashes entertains fans with the purest form of Test cricket. Over the years, the series has brought forth some of the most mind-boggling performances in the history of Tests. Some of the greatest devotees of Test cricket have graced the field in the 140-year-long series history and played some majestic knocks.
However, there have been some extraordinary innings played as well which saw the batters going berserk and hammering the opposition all around the ground. On that note, let’s take a look at the top three individual innings with the most sixes in Ashes history:
3. Kevin Pietersen (7 sixes), Oval, 5th Test, Ashes 2005
Kevin Pietersen announced his arrival in style in Ashes 2005 as he scored twin fifties at Lord’s in the first Test. However, he brought out his best on Day 5 where he scored 158 off just 187 balls, smashing 15 fours and seven sixes. Courtesy of his knock, England managed to draw the Test and win the series 2-1.
2. Ben Stokes (8 sixes), Headingley, 3rd Test, Ashes 2019
The third Test of the Ashes 2019 will go down in history as one of the greatest Tests played ever. Chasing 359, England were reeling at 286/9 when Ben Stokes took centre stage and played the innings of his life. The southpaw scored 135* off 219 balls, smashing 11 fours and eight mammoth sixes to set up a miraculous win and level the series 1-1.
1. Ben Stokes (9 sixes), Lord’s, 2ns Test, Ashes 2023
Stokes once again brought his ‘A game’ to the fore with his side reeling at 193/6, chasing 371 in the second Test of Ashes 2023 at Lord’s. The England captain played a breathtaking innings of 155 (214), clobbering nine fours and nine gigantic sixes. However, despite his heroics, England lost by 43 runs.
