Most runs in Tests in 2022
The year 2022 saw a few whirlwinds and consistent performances on the 22 yards. Meanwhile, batting megastars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had a forgettable year in the traditional format as far as individual performances are concerned.
Notably, the elite list also features one of the best batters in English cricket and arguably the modern-day red-ball great of this era. Without further ado, here’s a look at the three batters who made 2022 a year to remember for themselves.
3. Usman Khawaja- 1080
Australian opener Usman Khawaja has been one of Australia’s key performers in Tests this year and had made significant contributions with the bat. The Pakistan-born cricketer has amassed 1080 runs from 12 matches. He could have been on top of this list had the Aussies got a chance to bat in the second innings of the just-concluded Boxing Day Test match at the MCG. The southpaw could only manage one run against his name in the first innings.
2. Joe Root- 1098
Joe Root, the top run-getter in the format last year, will have to settle for a second-place finish this time around after Babar Azam’s heroic century in the Karachi Test against New Zealand deprived him of retaining his top honour. Root has scored 1098 runs in 15 matches this year, including five centuries and two half-centuries. He also entered the prestigious 10000 Test runs club earlier this year.
1. Babar Azam- 1184
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam takes the ‘Numero Uno’ spot in this category. Babar has had a dream year with the bat across formats this season. Notably, he is also the top-ranked ODI batter in the ICC Rankings. Azam will be finishing the year as the leading run-getter in red-ball cricket with 1184 runs to his name courtesy of his ton against New Zealand at Karachi’s National Bank Arena. The 161 also Babar’s fourth Test century of 2022.
