Most runs by a captain in a single Ranji Trophy edition
A skipper is one who looks to his side from the front by scoring runs or picking up wickets. He shoulders the dual responsibility of his team playing in any series or tournament. Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class Indian competition played between multiple teams representing state cricket associations. A few cricketers have managed to do the most of the bulk of the scoring while leading their respective teams in a particular season and they feature in this article.
Let’s take a look at the most runs scored by a skipper in a single Ranji Trophy season (Top 3):
3. Vikram Rathour (983)
Former India cricketer Vikram Rathour occupies the third position in this chart. The right-handed batter stuck 983 in 11 matches while captaining Punjab in the 1998/99 edition. In 16 innings, he smashed three centuries and three half-centuries and got the runs at an average of 61.43, with the highest score of 207. Overall, he ended the campaign as the fourth-highest run-getter. Rathour was instrumental in his side reaching the semi-final of that edition only to lose to Karnataka by a margin of seven wickets as they missed out on an opportunity of reaching the summit clash.
2. Mayank Agarwal (990)
In the recently concluded 2022/23 Ranji Trophy season, Mayank Agarwal surpassed Rahour’s tally. The 32-year-old hammered 990 runs in nine games while skippering Karnataka. In 13 innings, he slammed three hundred and six half-centuries and scored at a staggering average of 82.50 and with the best score of 249. Mayank also finished the edition as the highest run-getter. However, a mammoth knock of 249 went in vain in the semi-final clash against the eventual champions Saurashtra.
1. Wasim Jaffer (1260)
Former India player Wasim Jaffer finds himself in the first position in this chart. The right-handed batter racked up 1260 runs in ten matches with Mumbai side in the 2008/09 edition. In 16 innings, Jaffer smacked four centuries and five half-centuries and amassed his runs at a solid average of 84.00 and with the highest score of 301. He also ended the edition with the most runs to his name, with Ajinkya Rahane finishing behind him in the second spot with 1089 runs. It turned out to be a memorable campaign for Jaffer as Mumbai defeated Uttar Pradesh by 243 runs in the final.
